Hi,

Today we've launched our public postcode/point lookup service:

    http://mapit.mysociety.org/

The launch blog post is at http://www.mysociety.org/2010/07/26/mapping-points-and-postcodes/ but I'll just mention the main selling points again here.

It covers the whole UK, including Northern Ireland, yet is still open data under an attribution licence. The ONS dataset including Northern Ireland cost us £200 as a data supply charge, so if anyone thinks that a free public postcode lookup that includes Northern Ireland is a nice thing to have and would like to donate to the charity that runs mySociety, please feel free :) https://secure.mysociety.org/donate/

It can do precise point lookup, not just postcodes; it can return actual co-ordinates of boundaries in a variety of formats; and it has both pre- and post-election Westminster boundaries (and as council boundaries etc. change in future, it will still keep the old versions of those too, I hope).

The site is written in GeoDjango on a PostGIS database, and the source code is available at http://github.com/mysociety/mapit - it's currently already used by FixMyStreet and I'll be switching our other sites over to using it in the near future.

If anyone has any questions about how it works or similar, please do ask.

:-)

ATB,
Matthew
