Yes, Spot.us is crowdfunding and Help Me Investigate is crowdsourcing. We
were both shortlisted for the Knight News Challenge the same year - Spot.us
won the funding, we didn't - but the fact that we got so far gave me the
impetus to develop the idea a lot further and eventually get it off the
ground with 4iP.

Dave Cohn (who launched Spot.us) and I have talked a few times about a
partnership of some form - Spot.us is heading from crowdfunding towards
crowdsourcing and there's always been plans to use crowdfunding for Help Me
Investigate too. The main obstacle is administrative - we had to form a
limited company for the 4iP funding but to crowdfund online you normally
have to be a registered charity.

Also, many tools for raising money take commission at a level that makes it
unviable if you're going to try to raise small sums of money.

Otherwise, http://www.sparked.com/ looks an interesting general
crowdsourcing tool
