I was able to solve this by running on the buildbot machines, so I won't have to push this debugging patch to main trees, which is good. The root cause of these failures is MDEV-31655, https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/MDEV-31655. Sad that this serious bug was actually visible as test failures in the CI for years without being fixed.
