Hi, Otto, This is a symptom of a git bug that was reported by me here: https://lore.kernel.org/git/ZJQr0_aC-NlLXDgj@pweza/ fixed by Daniel Black here: https://lore.kernel.org/git/[email protected]/ and was merged about 15 months ago.
Of course, it could be something else entirely. What git version is it? What does 'git remote' say?
