I actually meant complaining about the inverse: the impossibility to
produce [" ", " a", " b"], about one could complain with some right.

But anyhow, I agree with you. About the whitespace part that is. I
don't hate jsp-pages, at least not the jsp-aspect of it. (IE
compatible) html and CSS, those yes ;-)
