Hello all, 1. Monday March 7 was not a beautiful day for those who like software to be free of patents. The European Commission accepted the directive unchanged, acting against the will of parliament and many regulations. European Parliament will have a second chance to alter the directive and it probably will, but the brute force used to accept the directive in the meeting of the council yesterday, means there are no easy wins. http://wiki.ffii.org/Cons050307En.
2. Most of you have seen mails passing by concerning the Holland Open Software Conference. The idea is to have a (large) yearly Dutch conference on open software. I would like to invite you all to be there. There are just very few free passes, but I have several 85-euro (all in) options (just in case you or your employer can't/won't pay the full price). And if you can't even afford this, please turn to me directly and I'll see what I can do. I would like some developers to have a session (or two) on Wednesday June 1. This could be a workshop concerning the developmentmodel, hands on installation of MMBase, communicating with the community, etc. Please give me your own ideas. See (www.hollandopen.nl; soon powered by MMBase btw). And there will be a presentation for a larger audience on the Conference (so Monday or Tuesday). I hope, as the Program Committee has to except our contribution. This Contribution will be in a 'scientific track' as we were invited to (and did!) write an article for the IBM Systems Journal on open source that will be published in May 2005. I was thinking of having a duo presentation with one of the committers and/or writers. Of course, I can also step aside, as long as we make sure the presentation is well prepared and the speaker trained. We don't get many chances like this.... http://www.research.ibm.com/journal/abstracts/sj/442/becking.html I saw in the minutes of the shouting meetings a lot of good ideas passing by. We will of course come back to that. Hope we will be able to find a way to move ahead with broad support from all parties involved. Kind regards, Jo.
