I agree with Pierre that it is time to request the status of our core
discussion again. It is an important community issue and he just picked
one small technical issue to bring it in focus again. Another good
reason why Pierre is raising this question is, because he is the project
leader of a project which tries to clean up everyones mess. We aren't
helping him when we keep making a mess.
We have two development groups in our community. The first one is
working _on_ the core and the second one is working _with_ the core. Now
the one-million-euro question Pierre asked is: What is the core?
Related questions are: how are we going to deal with non-core sources
and which rules apply? We have asked ourselves these questions a couple
of times, but it was beginning to slip away again and not all questions
were answered.
The sitestat example (Pierre could have used the
GoogleHighlighterFactory too) is clearly not core functionality and the
question how to deal with these things hasn't been answered. Classes for
the taglib and email are clear where they should go, but we haven't
defined guidelines for these classes.
My pragmatic side says deal with this one now and with others when they
popup. We have reached the point where we are out of generic tranformers
and we need a place for specific trenaformers. I would go for an
application transformers and move all non generic class to that
application. I know that we then still don't have guidelines.
I have only one question remaining. In which weekend are we going to
finish the pending steps in the optimization project? :)
