source-code incompatibilities were not documented, but the relevant
onces are easily spotted by a recompilation...

Binary incompatibility is the default I fear... I'd recompile my
extensions against the right version of 1.8 always, just to be on the
safe side..

Perhaps we can simply add to the release-notes: recompile all your
dependencies. That's perhaps considerably simpler than trying to
document when to and when not to do that.

I btw think that we should only want to garantuee stability in the
'API'. A few weeks ago I tried to initiate a discussion about what that
actually is ('everything essential to run an RMMCI clinet'),  but it was
ignored.
