The contributions version uses the query framework to create index
queries, whcih allows for quite complex indices. It can also read mmapps
index-configuration.
It also uses the function framework. Because of that you need 1.8 though.
Personally I would hope that the good bits from mmapps (i.e. search
facilities) and contributions can eventually be combined.
