Hai,
I want to announce to the developers that i have taken a job at
Noterik as of 1 sept. 2006 to help them with improving their
streaming platform. As a result i will have to scale down my
involvement in the mmbase community. Its unclear at this time how
much time i can still spend on mmbase if any. For me its a big step
since i have been involved with the project since its inception at
the VPRO mostly working on mmbase related projects full time since then.
I think its fair to explain a little bit why i am taking this step.
In the end it boils down to the fact that over the last few years the
mmbase community has not been able to move fast enough in the
direction i want and this has taken a lot of the enjoyment out of the
work and the reasons i feel we should work on it. In the few
discussions i have had with Noterik i feel a rush of excitement on
things we can do and its that feeling i have been missing in this
community for a while now.
I think there is still amazing value in the community and in the
product but i hope that the community does a little less talking
about opensource or just using it but also starts contributing. At
the moment mmbase is made by a few people not even a few companies
unlike we are seeing in the rest of the world where its becoming more
and more excepted for companies to 'free' programmers for opensource
projects.
There are some really nice projects starting now in the mmbase
community and the technical board (which i will resign from) is doing
its best but its simply to little and to slow for me to continue my
work the way i want. In the end mmbase will fail longterm if the
partners don't come up with a way to support developers who want to
work on projects. This is a job for the combined managers of the
partners not the job of the developers. We have been lucky so far
that they have done so much on their own without any practical support.
I will do my best to keep in contact with the core developers and if
possible help out and keep maintaining the applications i have made.
I will also do my best to keep coming to the developers meetings and
see where i can help but for the time being it will only be as a
private supporter and mostly to keep in touch with the other
developers who i became friends with the last few years.
Greetings,
Daniel Ockeloen.
