My comment is that a vendor gains an advantage by allowing others to inspect and help troubleshoot, at least those problems that are not easily reproduced (the hard ones!). I don't think anybody wants to own the source, but being able to use it for debugging intermittent problems is very helpful. Sometimes they are bugs in the client code, and sometimes in the vendor code. But it's really hard when your only option is to reproduce it with the right traces in place.
