Well, I've stumbled into some small problems with signed/unsigned numbers :-)
I found a bug in MagicXMLReader which I've fixed (presently only in HEAD, but will probably port it to 1.7 soon), I hope it would not give conflicts at your side.
I didn't make a lot of changes in MagicXMLReader, so it probably will not cause a lot of conflicts.
