prevent output on one line?

All,   the fact that most of the source of the (custom) editwizard pages is written on a single line, makes it very hard to debug e.g. _javascript_ and other custom code.   A bit _javascript_ at the top of the output of the editwizards is shown okay, but as from <BODY... and downwards all is on one line. Since this occurs in multiple browsers somewhere in the MMBase chain it seems that everything that isn't between <xsl:text...> or <![CDATA[ is stripped from linebreaks.   Has anyone experienced this before while debugging MMBase output and can point me in the right direction to prevent MMBase from wrapping everything on one line?
