So, should I check this in in the 1.7 branch?
Since I cleaned quite a lot of code, maybe I should do it in 1.8, and only remove the exception-throwing in 1.7?
Definitely in 1.8, in 1.7 perhaps after the 1.7.1 release so it can mature before 1.7.2.
