I don't know if the node field type is any better then just a relation here.
I'd say no.

By anyhow it is a more general problem: How to plug in specific things into
your generic set of templates. I actually think that this issue could be
addressed by the much-talked-about 'packaging' project, because
'pluggability' and 'configurability' seem to be a rather important
characteristics of a package.
 
Another example is the security implementation, there must be a way to make
JSP's completely independent of that. (many jsp's now e.g. dependent on a
'loginpage', making then only work for security implementation with
name/password).
