I don't really understand the hack, because I am already able to write special
characters (without any change in code), and also %h and %w are working.

Also the @-notation seems to work already, and I don't understand why it is
essential to use a autocreated file to use %-chars.

The only thing which I could not reproduce yet was writing a quote in the
text.

I also did not test on Windows. Why could you not write non-ascii characters
in windows when not using a file?

I could not readily find in the image-magick documentation that the @-file
must be coded according to UTF-8. Is it? Or does it also use some
environmental setting for that? Since it is very hard to get those
environmental settings right, when not using a file, it would make it lots
easier to use a file if it doesn't matter there.

I am not against the proposed changes, but I don't really get the point.

Btw, I think we also need a method to use %h and %w e.g. in the 'height' and
'width' attributes of gui-values, and of course also on other places. (a
'height' and 'width' function on a icache would perhaps come in handy (it's
a peitty that 'ckey' is so unusable for that)).
