I have seen some companies use keyboard scanners which essentially
emulate the keystrokes equivalent to a bar code. In effect this works
as if the user is keying in the number represented by bar code. Code
can then be added to enable the system to respond as desired.
For example, if there is a sales order with say 100's of lines, and
during picking list registration update, you want to update only a few
lines based on what you have really picked. You can scan the item bar
code, have the cursor move to the corresponding sales line, update the
qty. Repeat this for next item and so on.
This is based on a requirement from one of our clients. However, I am
sure there are other ways to handle your requirements.
