And now that I think about it, about three years before all of that (I was 9 I think), my dad gave me a Heathkit that I wired up logic circuits to answer pre-set questions on cardboard with holes for the light bulbs. I hardily recommend that to all new programmers -- building logic circuits by hand gives a good framework for understanding how computers think.
