A defining moment. A quick recap, my objective was to use 
hook_form_alter to add ahah to a field in a content profile form.

When I add a new field, ahah is loaded and the jquery code on the page 
contains the appropriate metadata regarding the field. When I add an 
#ahah key to an existing field, none of that happens.

We've come full-circle, I think.
