Let's keep in mind that this is about apps using Qt WebView and Qt WebEngine, 
not about the rest of Qt.

We tried to make Qt WebEngine on macOS to be compliant with the Mac App Store 
for some time. In Qt 5.9 there's a configure switch for it: 
-appstore-compliant. Anyhow, unfortunately we found out that this is not 
feasible anymore with newer Chromium versions, so we had to drop that for Qt 
5.10 and future versions. But even in Qt 5.9 it was a (compile time) opt-in, 
because you effectively loose functionality which might not be what you want.

This is indeed a goal. But this is about tradeoffs: Unfortunately we don't have 
'the perfect' backend that covers all use cases for Qt WebView on macOS right 
now.

It's just not something you want to do in a patch level release, because 
stability.

We use QtWebEngine on Windows, and it works well, but do not use it on Mac or 
iOS because of the App Store requirements. (We are a commercial customer)

I was frustrated by a similar decision with Qt Multimedia where the default 
backend on Windows was changed From
AVFoundation (Which can play x264 encoded video out of the box) to DirectShow 
(which cannot).

In both cases, this decision pushes users away from Qt because it does not 
'just work' as expected, and also
makes it necessary to compile Qt to get basic functionality working.
(IMHO, it should not be necessary for most end users to compile Qt)

Qt has gone to very great lengths with Qt Creator and the examples that 'just 
work' out of the box, which in my Opinion is fantastic!
Although QtWebEngine is wonderful, it seems to me that given the App Store 
requirements that we must use the native WebView, that it might be wise, and 
benefit Qt as a whole to reconsider this decision.
