It's your choice whether you want to use it or not. But as you noticed, the compiler is a tool only made available for commercial customers. If you want it, you have to obtain a commercial license. But if you upgrade to 5.9, you get qmlcachegen. Note that the cachegen tool is not a replacement for the compiler: it's a cache.
