Well, i have this problem: Qtopia switches to the gsmhandset state ONLY when i answer a phone call and it takes a fraction of second to do that. Qtopia DOESN'T switch to the gsmhandset state when i make a call, so i can't hear the rings while calling and i can't hear the endpoint user-answer. Can you test if you have the same problem?
