After reading more of the mails on this subject , and hearing that it occurred in qtopia as well I began to really suspectthe new kernel. So I loaded up an earlier kernel ( uImage-2.6.22.5-moko11+svnr2937-r6-neo1973.bin) and tried my images of Nov17 and Nov 11. Both booted happily, none of that "Please wait" forever.
THey do have other problems no sound and not properly sending and receiving calls,
but I hope people will now look again at that new kernel. cheers, clare
