It's possible what you're hearing is exactly what I reported in Bug 1198, which I tend to agree is a hardware issue. http://bugzilla.openmoko.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1198 You describe "crackling," where I put it as "loud, percussive, rhythmic noises" -- but "crackling" is a pretty good description of my symptom as well. Although I didn't have any notable problems with the included headphones.
