Tried to send that earlier, but Gmail didn't like it. To a certain extent that's what OSGi offers for Java, too. for the release number of the overall archive, something like "1.0.0" sounds OK, if the assemblies use a more detailed version (like "6.1.7600.16385" for our Notepad[?]) guess that could be fine. If the first 3 digits match the archive version or tag it would be good. See Windows, Microsoft itself often doesn't bother (neither do competitors like Oracle, see "Java 8" still being "1.8" internally) because our "Windows 7" here is actually "6.1.7601" (hence the first 3 parts of Notepad, the overall OS got a patch or SR)
In large Java systems you also got longer numbers, e.g. something like " 1.0.1.21" for some of the products we deal with here. Only the "1.0.1" would be the external product release, but Jenkins automatically builds and tags each of them every night. Something we might aim for if we can. See version questions around Jira.
