What version of e-smith, and particularly, what version of the
e-smith-backup RPM do you have? Are there any messages concerning "st0" in
the file /var/log/messages?

Taper obviously works for some where flexbackup doesn't. OTOH, it uses a
proprietary (but not secret) tape format, whereas flexbackup uses generic
formats. And taper cannot be used for an automated restore - you can only
restore from taper's console GUI.
