I did some testing in regards to the slow smtp connection to a
4.1b3 server. Here are my observations;

Using Pegasus Mail as the mail client, I sent 21 messages to the
same recipient under 2 different settings.
1: I set the client to send each message immediately and hold it in
queue. I then chose 21 messages from one of my mail folders and
chose to forward all messages to the same recipient, but as
individual messages. As each message was prepared it was sent
to the smtp box. As each message took olny a fraction of a
second to send, I had no problems.

2: I set the client to queue all messages to send later. I then chose
the same 21 messages and chose to forward all messages to the
same recipient, but as individual messages. once all messages
were ready, I attempted to connect to the smtp box. The first 10
messages were sent with out a problem, but message 11 took
longer that all the previous 10 combined, as did 12, 13 & 14. The
whole connection died part way through sending message 15.

I replated this with a different set of messages, just in case there
was something wrong with the ones I originaly used, but I got the
same basic results.

I checked the maillog (I can supply it if you wish) but there was
nothing that stood out. Both sessions started a smtpd session and
then passed the message on to smtpfwdd to deliver to the
destination server. The only difference I noticed was that for the
1st test each message was handled by a separate smtpd session,
while the 2nd test (queue and send all at once) all message where
handled by the same smtpd session.

FYI, I tryied the same queue and send test on my e-smith 4.0.1
box and had no problem.

Could this problem be an issue of 4.0.1's qmail-smtpd vs 4.1's
obtuse-smtpd?

I'll let you ponder now...
Dean
