Hmmm.
I normally use rpm -Uhv. So for your case I would have typed:

rpm -Uhv --nodeps mgetty-1.1.14-8.i386.rpm

I have never had an occasion to use "install" in front of it.

Is the -U not needed?

[root@seaport rpm]# install rpm -Uhv --nodeps mgetty-1.1.14-8.i386.rpm
install: invalid option -- U
