In a former life I was called to a site where someone specifically
choose a uniprocessor kernel, then later added a second CPU and wondered
why performance didn't change :-) The interesting thing is that they
also had data which supposedly showed performance went down when they
added the second CPU. Of course the data didn't show that - it showed
that performance was identical with or without the second CPU.

Correct. The SMP/non-SMP status is not stored by us at all. It's only stored
in lilo.conf, which is generated at install time depending on the hardware.
