I have ran into this also, along with the mysql root password not working.
I have already submitted this as a bug. Also, it is intermitent because it
only happens on some installations, including those on the same machines.
I've done several installs on my test machine to see. sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't.

Well great news I have e-smith version 4.1b2 downloaded and installed
without problems.
I have encounted a problem with MySQL.
At the console logged in as root I issue the command
mysqladmin version
reply
mysqladmin: connect to server at "localhost, failed"
error: 'Accessdenied for user :' root@localhost' (using password:no)'
Is this a bug.
If so how do I fix it.
