I didn't mention I'm going out from behind my e-smith machine with an MS 
PPTP client to a PPTP server behind another (different) firewall, and as 
far as I can remember that wasn't working correctly.

You could always run SMP with pptp without using a different kernel. The
problems were with modules shipped with the PPP RPM, and only those
modules needed to be fixed, by compiling them correctly. An update RPM has
been available for quite some time.
