        This won't work on e-smith, though, because the httpd.conf doesn't
allow overriding access restrictions with .htaccess files.  If Garret
insists on doing this via an .htaccess file, he needs to read the apache
docs regarding the AllowOverride directive, see how it's used in
httpd.conf, and make the appropriate changes.  Of course, if he's
editing httpd.conf anyway, he could just as well put the password
protection (or deny access, or whatever else) in there.  Or, better yet,
make a template fragment in
/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf/ with the access
restrictions in place, so they'll survive console reconfiguration.
