I've been using mine on my SuSE box since kernel 2.2.14. Support for them is built in from kernel 2.2.18 and up and in the 2.4 series of kernels. To use with e-smith, you'd have to apply a kernel patch (available from OnStream's web site at http://www.onstreamdata.com/support/linux/index.html and compile a new kernel or upgrade to a 2.4.x series kernel. You'd also need to include ide-scsi support as a module regardless if you use the 2.4.x kernel (I'd also recommend it for the 2.2.x kernel after it's patched). Theoretically, I see no reason why one can't use an OnStream DI-30 with e-smith if one's willing to do the work to get it done. My e-smith boxes have SCSI HP SureStore Dat drives attached so I can't test it on either of my boxes, but I'd be really surprised if you can't get it to work, and as mentioned, I've been using one successfully for quite some time with my SuSE box. All the info you need is on OnStream's site mentioned above. Presumably the next version of e-smith will include a kernel that doesn't have to be patched or compiled to get support for this drive. Final note - you must use a 32K block size with OnStream tapes. I also recommend the use of Taper with these drives just because it would be much easier to get working.
