After you've added your e-smith server as a "Directory Service" in
Outlook Express, make sure you've properly specified your "Search Base"
under the Advanced tab of the Properties dialog.  
If your machine name is "mydomain.com", then your Search Base would be
"dc=mydomain,dc=com".  Doing an LDAP lookup would then produce a line of
this form in your log file:

  Jul 17 06:17:41 e-smith slapd[3643]: conn=65 op=1 SRCH
base="DC=MYDOMAIN,DC=COM" scope=2...
