Your experience might be different, but I think that it is best to locate
the profiles outside the home directory, so that they are safe against
access by any means other than the profile save/restore functions of
winxx. Strange things may occur if the profile is inadvertently modified
or deleted.

The next question is exactly how to locate the profile outside the local
directory (in, say, /home/e-smith/profiles/username). There have been
problems with profile location in earlier versions of samba, and the
current documentation ("man smb.conf") attempts to explain the different
uses of "logon path" and "logon home" - but I still find it not perfectly
clear.
