If you try enabling schema checking you'll see why it is disabled.

The LDAP schema has not been changed during the life of the product, yet
there has been no demand from our customers for us to change it. I would
really like to update the LDAP schema, and make more extensive use of
LDAP. I'm pretty sure that we will do that for the next major release
(IOW, not for 5.1).
