The question of USB modem support came up the other day, so I did a little research on what would be needed to provide support. Not much, it seems. I don't have such a beast, but if someone out there does, I'd be interested to know whether this HOWTO does the job. Please let me know you get along if you try it.
Speculative mini-HOWTO - using a USB modem for dialout ------------------------------------------------------ - Create the necessary device file(s): mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM0 c 166 0 mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM1 c 166 1 mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM2 c 166 2 mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM3 c 166 3 - Cconfigure /etc/modules.conf so that driver module is loaded when required. Add this line to /etc/modules.conf: alias char-major-166 acm - Configure SME server to use USB modem for dialout: /sbin/e-smith/db configuration set DialupModemDevice /dev/usb/ttyACM0 /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade /sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot - Surf the web! Or, failing that, let me know that there is a problem and I'll give you pointers for the investigation. NB: USB ADSL and cable modems are a very different and much more difficult proposition.
