        That's 5 hours' difference, which interestingly enough is the exact
difference between GMT and EST.  Wonder if there's any connection?

        For the sarcasm-impaired, yes, there is.  e-smith/SME expects your
hardware clock to be set to GMT.  If you set the date/time through
the web-based server manager, everything should be correct.
