There has been two types of problems reported. One is people can't even ping over the VPN. This should not be samba related. The other is reports of dropping samba services. One minute everything is fine, the next samba services are gone but ping and the network connection appear alive and well. That is why I asked for people like yourself to give it a try and report. There may also be issues with the PPTP subsystem as well. Upgrading samba at least eliminates one possibility.
