I persoaly use it and it is very useful because we have, in my compagny, to
access to a private internet network via a router placed by the society
offering this service.

The only thing I then have to do is add this network using this gateway
which is very easy and practical.
Without this, I would have to edit my route table and doing this by hand is
not very enjoyable ...

Sure, but they are not "local" networks, and should not be treated as
such. I agree that it would be nice to selectively allow some remote
networks/hosts access to certain services.
