I persoaly use it and it is very useful because we have, in my compagny, to access to a private internet network via a router placed by the society offering this service.
The only thing I then have to do is add this network using this gateway which is very easy and practical. Without this, I would have to edit my route table and doing this by hand is not very enjoyable ... I agree that it would be nice to selectively allow some remote networks/hosts access to certain services.
