you need to add a line in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf ErrorDocument 401 http://www.youserver.com/sslerror.html
then if you want to put a link back to the same place with an https:// link you can or even make a meta redirect to take the browser there in 1 second. note: this file will have to be in an area that is not protected by the ssl. I can't check mine right now but I have about 5 of the ErrorDocument types defined see http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/misc/custom_errordocs.html for a quick rundown from apache In sherpath you can set the config to connect with ssl only - local and external seperately - and it will automatically take you from an http url to an https url btw Brandon , I am about 60% through the Sherpath help translation. I will forward you and sherpath each a copy of the english when I get it done. It looks like my schedule is busier the rest of the week so I can't guess how long it will take yet. Currently it will be a directory replacement - till sherpath accepts it and makes the help ML (multi-lingual) with language string files like the rest of sherpath.
