you need to add a line in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf

ErrorDocument 401 http://www.youserver.com/sslerror.html

then if you want to put a link back to the same place with
an https:// link you can or even make a meta redirect to take
the browser there in 1 second.

note: this file will have to be in an area that is not protected
by the ssl.

I can't check mine right now but I have about 5 of the ErrorDocument
types defined
see http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/misc/custom_errordocs.html for a
quick rundown
from apache

In sherpath you can set the config to connect with ssl only - local and
external seperately - and it will automatically
take you from an http url to an https url

btw Brandon , I am about 60% through the Sherpath help translation. I
will forward you and sherpath each
a copy of the english when I get it done. It looks like my schedule is
busier the rest of the week
so I can't guess how long it will take yet. Currently it will be a
directory replacement - till sherpath accepts it and
makes the help ML (multi-lingual) with language string files like the
rest of sherpath.
