Here are some answers I can give you since I am in the exactly same
situation ...

First, yes, you can configure SME to delegate to another server, this is
extremely easy and I recommend it since SME is a secure mail server (with no
open relay for example) unlike Exchange which is by default open relay
unless you make some tricks to correct this really stupid state ...

For your questions :

1) using the Trend engine (via the ServiceLink subscription) is a very good
choice : this is not very expensive (2000 euros/year), the update is
automatic and done every hour and this is absolutely transparent, you have
nothing to do, this can't be easier.
Concerning licences, you have no licences to buy, just subscribe to the
servicelink since you want to delegate the job to another server (in fact,
you juste use 1 licence, the other licences are for you Exchange box since
this is the onlu "user" of you mail server ...)

2) I have no answer for this, I never had to care about this ...

3) absolutely wrong, you just have to devine your domain name correctly to
suit the domain managed by your Exchange box (if your e-mail is
[EMAIL PROTECTED], you have to configure your SME to be on the
mycompany.com domain and configure Exchange to manage mycompany.com too,
that's all ...)
Here is a trick, if you want to manage multiple domain names (mycompany.com,
mysociety.net, etc etc ...), juste define these name in your Exchange and
add virtual domains in your SME box .. This is very easy and it works
flawlessly.

4) What do you mean ? What do you exactly want to do with this ?

Now, here is a last trick, configure your SME to delegate mail management to
your Exchange box and configure Exchange to send mail to your SME as a
delegate server and this for 2 reasons :

1) SME will act like a "spool" for e-mails so your Exchange box won't have
to deal with queues (which is not a bad idea since Exchange is very ungry
with ressources) and as I suppose your Exchange will be used for groupware
too, this is a good point.

2) your outgoing e-mails will then be scanned too by the Trend engine so
that you are sure that you are not spreading any viruses from your users to
your clients or partners ... this is a little thing but really, it helps for
good relationship ;o)

And don't worry, SME is a pure marvel, it will take only few minutes to
build a system which is solid as a rock !

Objet : [e-smith-devinfo] Antivirus Firewall

This is somewhat of a devinfo issue for me....

I need to setup SME as the gateway (ie DNS, proxy, nat, firewall), for a
while we will use SME for mail but we will eventually HAVE to install
(sorry I must say it - I hate swearing) M$ Exchange.

I can then setup SME to delegate e-mail to the Exchange server?

However I would like to include SMTP antivirus scanning from the
firewall (SME server) on all mail traffic.....

Questions:
1. I believe the commercial Trend antivirus can do this but there are
licening issues?

2. Can RAV do this - when you setup SME to delegate the mail, what is
actually changed, I assume some smpt-check rule to is setup to pass mail
through? If so how would I need to intercept the mail traffic? Would I
hook into Obtude-SMTPD?

3. I have heard that when delegating mail to another server, you have to
setup all the user-accounts on the SME server, otherwise the mails are
bounced?

4. M$ Exchange (in all it's wonder) doesn't use port 25 for "advanced"
mail functions - how would change the port settings for the mail relay?
