Sorry, Charlie - I think you perhaps misunderstood the question.  I 
understand the rationale for creating one group for each and every user, but 
the question was the other way around.

Every time you create a *group* in SME, it creates a *user* to go with that 
group.  The URL you gave us doesn't explain that behaviour...
