An electronic timer IS a good (and cheap) idea until you can come up
with a reliable workaround. While working at an ISP I had to resort
to this method back when we had analog modems to prevent problems.
It seemed that out of a pool of 250 modems, a random modem would
decide not to answer after just a few days operation.

My solution - power cycle all modems at 3:30 AM. Net result:
Eliminated problems with non-responding modems and got happier
customers. Ultimate solution was to change to newer technology.

It was worthwhile to think outside the box in that situation.
