A variation of that theme would be to:

1) install a fresh software raid system on two new disk drives.
2) attach the old drive as a slave drive, mount the root file system from 
it, and copy files from the old disk to the new pair, then reconfigure the 
new system with the configuration and account information.

Search the boards and you'll find out what files to copy, and what
commands to use to reconfigure the system after you are done.
