SME Server V5 version 5.6alpha6
Release notes - Aug 8 2002
------------------------------------------------------------

The Network Server Solutions Group of Mitel Networks is pleased to
announce the availability of SME Server V5 version 5.6alpha6.

*** NOTE: This is a developer preview. Do not install this release on ***
*** production servers. Please report all feedback to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
*** Please include the tag [5.6] in the subject line of any feedback. ***

This release includes *no* new features and updates to almost *all*
packages.

All changes in this developer preview release are due to the release
being built on latest software versions, mostly direct from RedHat
version 7.3. This includes a change to the the current RedHat 7.3
kernel (version 2.4.18-5).

Package Upgrades
----------------
- All packages have been upgraded to the latest RedHat 7.3 updates.

- samba has been upgraded to version 2.2.5.

- wu-imap has been upgraded to imap-2001a with maildir patches.

Installer
---------

The installer version being used is unmodified from RedHat 7.3. This means
that the look and feel of the installer will be different and unfamiliar.

If you choose to do a fresh install (on a single disk, or a mirrored pair),
the install proceeds without a confirmation screen, and should complete without any
further prompts.

If you choose to do an upgrade of an existing server(1) the installer will
stop and prompt you for further instruction at a number of points. You
should accept its offer to create a swap file, and you should ask it
to proceed even though it hasn't found a /etc/redhat-release file.

(1) DO NOT UPGRADE A PRODUCTION SERVER WITH THIS RELEASE.

Caveats
-------

This is an alpha release, and has had little testing. We know that it has bugs,
and we want you to help us find them. Be sure to tell us about them(2).

The packet filtering firewall has been re-written to use the 2.4 linux kernel's
iptables firewall. The firewall may block traffic which you want to allow, or
may allow traffic which you wish to block. Do not trust it as your firewall.

The 2.4 kernel lacks specific masquerading modules for a number of protocols.
Some applications which use these protocols to traverse a gateway may fail
where they work in version 5.5. If you notice any such changes, please
let us know(2).

The RedHat installer does not support conversion of ext2 filesystems to ext3
when operating in kickstart mode. New installs will have ext3 filesystems
but upgrades won't.
