Php is great. GD 2 have nicer results than version 1.8. It
supports more functions (like imagecreatetruecolor). I use it a
lot to automaticly compress and resize pictures.

As I use an e-smith server for the development of Web sites,
I deplore that it is so difficult to have the lastest php rpms an
extensions in the 'RedHat word'.

The latest php versions I have found are on Troels Arvin web site
http://rpms.arvin.dk/ . Work well on a 5.6 box.

Here what he says about GD:

Yes, but it could take a while. I'll probably wait until PHP 4.3 is
released: It will contain GD 2. Hopefully, that will put an end to the
endless problems with using GD from PHP.
