I am very excited about what has begun to unfold here. I too have
ponderd the how to utilize the unused disc space on the workstations
on even the smallest network. Heck, laptops are shipping with 80gig
drives now.

I am not very good at programming but would like to carry out any
tasks or testing that would be needed.

What I had thought about is similar to the Grid or Distributed
computing concept coupled with a Crawler or Bot similar to search
engines. The "Storage Bot" would discover the net attached devices and
ultimately create a protected partition on each eligible device that
would become a large storage pool or fault tolerant virtual disc. 

Anyway, I look forward to seeing what comes of the backup idea
hopefully lending a helping hand
