Sounds like snapshots to me. You can implement snapshots at the filesystem-level (LVM allows you to do this), or via scripts. I've got snapshot-like functionality running on two SME servers using an rsync backup script I wrote. I've seen discussions in devinfo about similar scripts in the past. Here's a good reference site:
