those APIs has a higher chance of portability than using udev.
Yes, but there is no way to avoid gudev usage for applications like
thunar that needs information about more than just power and storage
devices, not sure if there is a portable way here. HAL provided these
information, but also not sure if it worked on BSD systems at all.
